Mission Bit Brings Coding to Thurgood Marshall Academic High School
Mission Bit recently joined forces with Threads to pique an interest in coding with high school students.
Part of our outreach has come about in the form of workshops that partner with schools, organizations, and companies. These workshops take place at community locations and schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our latest workshop combined Mission Bit education with the aid of volunteers from Threads at Thurgood Marshall Academic High School. This workshop aimed to expose students to coding and Mission Bit opportunities.
In order to keep the quality of our workshops high we provide hands on learning for a small number of students. At this workshop we had 15 students in attendance who hadn’t been exposed to coding. The students learned to build websites on Wordpress and came away with an interest in computer science.
Our Program Manager, Davontae Foxx-Drew was in attendance. He shares, “the highlight of the event was seeing one our alumni teaching one of his peers how to build how to build a website on Wordpress.” At Mission Bit, we’ve done a great job of leveraging peer leadership and expanding this learning more opportunity to more students of color.
This is why Mission Bit is dedicated to bringing free coding classes to students in areas without access or resources to CS in their schools in hopes of eliminating the tech divide. We aim to teach 10,000 students how to code by the year 2020.
Our Fall, Spring, and Summer registration is open to students from underserved and underrepresented communities. There are no GPA requirements and any San Francisco or Oakland public high school student is encouraged to apply. Given the lack of diversity in the tech industry and our focus on equity we accept applications from students of color and girls who attend private schools in San Francisco as well.
We’re looking to do more coding workshops across the Bay Area. If you’re interested in having a workshop at your school or community center or a software engineer interested in sponsoring a workshops please contact us at info@missionbit.com.
